A conceptual and technical writeup of terra0’s contribution for Sotheby’s Nativey Digital: A Curated NFT Sale

terra0 has minted an NFT (ERC721 Token) which depicts a LiDAR scan of a German forest, and created an ‘Oracle’ smart contract which stores the average annual temperature rise as decided by NASA. When this value crosses the threshold of 2 degrees centigrade, the token is able to be burned by anyone who wants to call the smart contract function and do so. The NFT will premiere for sale in Sotheby’s ‘Natively Digital: A Curated NFT Sale’, June 3–10, 2021.

“ In order to create a new order[…] We have to carefully design and test models of “faceless agents”, which are proxies: fusions of organisations projects and processes.”

M. Tarasiewicz, RIAT Institute For Future Cryptoeconomics (2018)

Our most recent project - Premna Daemon - hopes to make clear the interrelationships between autonomy and sovereignty in the technologically augmented ecosystems of the near future. By way of an introduction to the project, we’ve decided to trace a selective history of autonomous technologies in both the cryptosphere and science fiction, before outlining the project in the context of these examples.

The eternal question of ‘when bloom’ has finally been answered

On the 1st of November 2018 — the day before Metamask implements its breaking change and no longer exposes user accounts by default — the Flowertokens project will enter archive mode.

This means that whilst the image timeline and token information will still be accessible via the web interface, there will be no further updates to the site (i.e. no new photos and no flower stat updates), and all trading will cease. …

This post serves as a explanation of the underlying smart contracts and the economic system behind the Flowertokens experiment, a discussion of its flaws, as well as what we learned from the process of designing and implementing it. If you aren’t familiar with the project, you can get familiar here.

When designing the economic system surrounding the ER721 tokens, we thought about ways for users to earn their initial investment back; an idea strongly grounded in our belief in regenerative ecology. In the long term we want to dive more into schemes whereby the natural system can generate a return…

This post serves as a explanation of the underlying infrastructure behind the Flowertokens experiment, a discussion of its flaws, and what we learned from the process involved in designing and implementing it. If you aren’t familiar with the project, you can get familiar here.

The two components that will be discussed are:

  1. The core functions of the Oracle
  2. The linking of tokens and their metadata

Core Oracle functions

The first of these components to be discussed is the Oracle’s core functions. Flowertokens tries to create a first combined crypto-collectible physical asset. But how? Everything involving real world data (i.e. data that originates from…

Flowertokens is a prototype: a small test case with which we hope to provoke a broader discussion around the tokenization and verification of natural commodities. Even if it works in its own right as an experimental micro-economy in both technical and economic terms, the project functions mainly as a visualisation of certain mechanisms. It demonstrates what is possible (and more importantly, what is not). This approach is very much dependent on our different narratives of the future, and the scenarios related to them.

Flowertokens is an experimental project centered around the tokenization and verification of natural commodities, and a first attempt at creating a combined crypto-collectible physical asset.

Users are able to buy, trade, and speculate on tokenized Dahlias (Dahlia x Hortensis) via an online marketplace. The state of the individual tokens is automatically updated according to the different phases of their corresponding plant’s growth.

Flowertokens further marks the beginning of a series of projects oriented around these themes from terra0 — a group of developers and researchers involved in the planning and creation of hybrid ecosystems.

What is the idea behind it?

Given the rise of digital crypto-collectibles…
